I complained in my review of Chasm City that the gee-whiz mechanics of space opera can't really sustain a 600-page narrative.

But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe. Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations-and the odds are against them. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.ĭetective Miller is looking for a girl. A secret that someone is willing to kill for-and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. Overall, this is a fantastic book that I would recommend to any SF fan.Humanity has colonized the solar system-Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond-but the stars are still out of our reach. I especially thought that the Battle of Thoth Station was written superbly well, and the conversation with Antony Dresden brought out the best in all the characters. It is full of mystery, epic action scenes, and fun relationships. The plot is great and engaging the whole time. My only criticism of their writing style is how they kept taking lowbrow shots at Mormons/LDS my religion. Corey(Daniel Abraham/Ty Franck) are a great duo. They bring out the good in each other whenever they talk and plan or act together. They both contrast each other sharply in their personality and their views of the world. Holden & Miller have an absolutely superb written relationship. Miller is a pessimist who basically thinks the world's gone to heck always. Naomi is probably one of the smartest, most individual women I have read in SFF. Holden is an optimist who always finds the good in things. It's not just him Holden, Naomi, and Miller, all these characters are supremely well developed. Amos is possibly one of the most funny characters I have read so far.

All the characters were great I thought especially Amos. First off we'll start with the characters. Both of their missions connect down in a way that they didn't think possible and they need to figure out what is going on in the solar system. Jim Holden finds a big secret with his crew when he is running errands for the Canterbury ice hauler on the rings of Saturn. It follows Jim Holden and his crew of the Rocinante. This is the first in a famous space opera series called The Expanse.

There is only one teeny tiny little bitty so small issue that I had with this awesome book that I'll talk about later.
